Reshmi Chetram

Preserving tradition & inspiring innovation in Kathak.

education, presentation & collaboration.

Reshmi

is an award winning Indian classical Kathak dancer, writer & educator. Reshmi is a Canadian of Indo-Guyanese descent & the disciple of her mother the late Deviekha Chetram, a figure without whom Kathak in Toronto; especially for those of Indo-Caribbean heritage would simply not be what it is. Reshmi navigated a rich cultural landscape that won her awards such as the Indo-Shastri scholarship to live between India & Toronto; bridging the gap of education & research in Kathak dance  in North America. In the early part of her career she spent many years performing locally & globally whilst simultaneously teaching what she has learned from her gurus and prominent mentors in the field such as; Late Pt Birju Maharaj, Vidushi Saswati Sen, Smt Sandhya Desai, Alok Parna Guha, Pratap Pawar, Maulik Shah, Deepti Gupta, Mahua Shankar & more.Over the course of a long and diverse career, Reshmi has evolved into a being whose artistic output leans on calling upon her fullest being, representing her ancestral roots, diasporic identity, emotional depth and authentic- vulnerable self; a place in which her extensive technical classical training, lived experience, energy & heart are now; embodied. Life experiences with postpartum, her mothers early-onset Alzheimer’s diagnosis at 56 & ultimately her death transformed Reshmi’s internal world and thus birthed a new dimension to her art & work in the field. A chapter rooted in human connection, healing & the spirit. Reshmi’s expression of  ancient classical forms in modern light, not as solely as a physical talent, but as living, breathing, and full-bodied expression of her innermost self is brought forward as an offering - every movement now comes led from her gurus above & her soul within.
